India Business Man Buys His Very First Flying Car

Sometime during the year of 2008, NRG businessman Subhash Shihora’s wife and six-month-old baby were not granted to board a flight from Delhi to Ahmedabad Irrespective of having a valid ticket because of a technical malfunction. Shihora, a significant stake-holder in the Rs 2 lakh crore Urok consultancy organisation within the uk, was so provoked he sued the air carrier for Rs 21 crore. He also wished to ensure that it by no means occurred repeatedly. And he found a way out — Shihora has grown to become the first Indian to buy the world’s first commercial flying car branded ‘Transition’, developed by a company in Massachusetts, United States.

Shihora now wants the car to be parked at his farmhouse off SG Road in Ahmedabad. But he fears getting permission may not be easy. He will need clearances from not just aviation agencies, but security agencies as well and has started talking to officials. 
“I fly down to Ahmedabad at least six times a year and then fly to Mumbai and Rajkot. I had taken a test drive of the flying car. By pressing just one button, the car turns into an aircraft. I have started taking flying lessons to get the licence,” says Shihora. He booked the car in 2009 and will get delivery in 2012. Shihora, who moved to UK in 1998, booked it for Rs 1 crore and will pay another Rs 1 crore by the time it is delivered. “With all taxes and duties paid, the car will cost me around Rs 6 crore in Ahmedabad.” 
The car, designed with foldable wings, successfully completed its 
first flight on March 5, 2009 and recently got clearance from the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration. The two-seater vehicle falls in the light aircraft category and requires a private pilot licence to fly it. The vehicle, which is big enough to fit into a home garage and runs on unleaded petrol, can travel up to 450 miles and can fly at 115 mph. 
Colonel VK Nagar, an aviation industry expert, said, “Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Airports Authority of India (AAI) may give permission under the micro light aircraft category. But a vehicle that can both be driven on roads and can be taken to the skies from anywhere may create issues with security agencies.”

A Solar Power Airplane Completed the World’s Primary International Flight - Powered by The Sun Only

The totally solar powered Solar Impulse aircraft made its maiden international flight across Europe today, piloted by Andre Borschberg. Slowly but surely, the aircraft flew from western Switzerland and over France and Luxembourg, to an airport in Brussels, Belgium. The Solar Impulse was first tested last summer, with a successful flight circling the skies above Switzerland.

The 300 mile flight took the Impulse about 12 hours, traveling at about 25 miles per hour, at an altitude of just under 12,000 feet. The one seater aircraft is similar in size to a large plane, but weighs the same as a sedan automobile. The wings are covered with 12,000 solar cells which absorb the sun’s energy, and in turn charge batteries that power the four propellers which are run by the 10-horsepower motors.
The Solar Impulse proved itself with last summer’s test flight, holding its endurance for a 26 hour, 10 minute, 19 second flight over Switzerland, that was powered  by the sun’s rays! It has also flown numerous times between Geneva and Zurich, but last Friday’s flight marked the first time it flew through crowded commercial airspace.
The plane plans to conquer transatlantic and round-the world flights in 2013 and 2014. The Solar Impulse team is excited about the possibilities, as these flights have proven that completely renewable-energy powered planes are not only possible, but a reality!
The Brussels airport will host an exhibition of the Solar Impulse, and details of green technology until May 29th, when the solar plane will jet to Paris to go on display at the Le Bourget air show.

New Technology May Provide Drinking Water And Electrical Power To Villages


Researchers have developed an aluminum alloy that could be used in a new type of mobile technology to convert non-potable water into drinking water while also extracting hydrogen to generate electricity.
Such a technology might be used to provide power and drinking water to villages and also for military operations, said Jerry Woodall, a Purdue University distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering.
The alloy contains aluminum, gallium, indium and tin. Immersing the alloy in freshwater or saltwater causes a spontaneous reaction, turning the water into steam and generating hydrogen and aluminum tri-hydroxide until the aluminum is used up. The hydrogen could then be fed to a fuel cell to generate electricity, producing potable water.

World record: 26 terabits per second data transmission achieved

German scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have succeeded in encoding data at a rate of 26 terabits per second on a single laser beam, transmitting them over a distance of 50 km, and decoding them successfully. This is the largest data volume ever transported on a laser beam. The process developed by KIT allows to transmit the contents of 700 DVDs in one second only.
